He was the son of Cuthbert and Catherine (maiden name unknown) Daniels. He married Mary Jane Layton in Putnam County, Indiana on September 15, 1858 living in Floyd Township by 1860 then moving to Coles County, Illinois after the Civil War. He joined the Indiana 148th Infantry, Company C.
