Albert M. Bradshaw was born in New York in 1838. He enlisted in the Union Army on April 20, 1861 and in 1862, President Lincoln appointed him lieutenant of the 127th N.Y. Volunteers. He left the Army in 1865 having attained the rank of captain. He was the leading real estate agent in Bricksburg,N.J. and one of the biggest resort promoters when the name was changed to Lakewood. He suceeded Joseph H. Van Hise as postmaster on April 6,1866, a position he held until February 25,1869. Ten months later, he was again appointed postmaster, this time until January 13,1873. He served two more appointments as postmaster from December 23,1890 - January 17,1895 and January 23,1899 until 1913. City delivery of mail began under the direction of Bradshaw in 1905 and he was the driving force behind the building of the first town hall in 1902. He died in 1915. The Captains grave is located in the Evergreen Cemetary at the foot of Spruce Street. It is said the Capt. Bradshaw had done more to benefit Lakewood than any other man.
