BLUEFIELD, Va. — Sadie Evelyn Johnston Bailey, 93, of 2268 Virginia Ave., Bluefield, Va., died Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family.

Born April 12, 1917 at Elbert, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jessee Fields Johnston and Carolyn Fortner Johnston.

She was a member of the Virginia Avenue Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va.

She graduated from West Virginia Business College and was in the vanguard of professional women, establishing her own public accounting practice in the Law and Commerce building in 1942. She maintained that practice until 1970, with a clientele that included Estees Clothing, Hawkins Funeral Home, the Pinnacle Restaurant and Carolyn's Boutique, among many others. She loved to travel, was an amateur photographer, and had a marvelous sense of style and a sharp wit.

Assisting her husband Dr. Lucian P. Bailey, she worked as a bookkeeper and veterinary assistant at the Animal Clinic in Bluefield, Va., for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Bluefield YMCA, was active in the PTA and was a loyal supporter of the Graham High School choirs.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Ted (Mary) Nissen and Mrs. Oake (Bessie) Williams Jr.; three brothers, Dickey Johnston, Dean Johnston and Jessee Scott Johnston.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Lucian P. Bailey of the home; two sons, Ovid Bailey and wife Mary of Kirkland, Washington and Darrell Bailey and wife Herminia Din of Carmel, Indiana; two daughters, Carol Eubank and husband Keith of Virginia Beach, Va., and Connie Bailey of the home; five grandsons, Adam Bailey, Marshall Bailey, Phillip Bailey, Josh Eubank and Shawn Eubank; nieces Eunice Bessenhoffer of Chicago, Ill., Joy June North of Morgantown, W.Va., Roberta Matney of Jackson Miss.; nephews Lyle Easter of Richmond, Va., James C. Bailey of Rock, W.Va., and Moffitt Smith of Peterstown, W.Va., and special relative Frank Wrenn.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. at Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va., on Monday, December 20, 2010, with the Reverend Don Scott and the Reverend Allen Hammond officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Va.

The family will receive friends at Dudley Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. tonight.

Pallbearers will be Rick Anderson, George Helmandollar, Corey Henderson, Beaman Johnston, Hobert Parnell, Perry Simpson and John Wood and Sam Minor. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jay Rodgin, William Daniel, Clyde Bowling, Jim Lindamood and Don Kensinger.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bluefield Union Mission or the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church.
