Helen Louise Winslett Eworonsky, 80, died Oct. 25, 2005, in her Brookings home of complications from diabetes.

She was born to Evah Ann Burton and Allen David Winslett Oct. 31, 1924, in Bon Air, Ala.

Schooled in a one-room schoolhouse serving pupils from first to sixth grade with one teacher, Mrs. Eworonsky remembered each child having their own water cup, with the water drawn from a well. The school was located on what is now the Talladega Auto Race Track in Talladega County, Ala., where the Winston 500 is held.

Mrs. Eworonsky attended grammar school in Lincoln, Ala. She graduated from Lincoln High School and two weeks later entered nurses' training at Citizens Hospital in Talladega.

In December 1944 she went to Charity Hospital in New Orleans, to receive additional training. It was there that she met Stanley Peter Eworonsky from New York City. They married Feb. 8, 1945, in Hattisburg, Miss. where he was stationed in the Army.

As nurses were not allowed to be married at that time, she was dropped from the nursing program. Ten years and two children later she resumed nurses' training and graduated from Caraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, Ala. She was appointed supervisor of a medical floor and held that position until relocating to Southern California, where she lived with her family for 35 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Eworonsky loved traveling and toured the United States extensively, also making trips to Poland, Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico. They often visited the islands of Hawaii to see their daughter in Kauai.

Mrs. Eworonsky is survived by daughter Patricia Terheggen of Brookings; son John Allan Eworonsky of Southern California; grandsons Ryan Kenneth Terheggen and Shannon Allan Eworonsky; three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Eworonsky died Feb. 11, 1999, two days after the couple celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Eworonsky was preceded in death by sister Amogen Erwin; brother Allan David Winslett Jr.; brother William Harper Winslett; sister Dorothy Walker, who died within a matter of days before Mrs. Eworonsky.

A graveside inurnment service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery in Brookings. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the cemetery office chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 2350 Oakmont Way, Suite 205, Eugene, OR 97401.

Cremation was in care of Redwood Memorial Chapel, Brookings.
