Former Commissioner of This County Is To Be Buried Sunday At 3:30 p.m.
R. M. Kirby, 77 year old pioneer citizen of Smith county, died Saturday morning at his home near Winona following an illness of three years. He was well known throughout the county, having been county commissioner for four years from 1918 until 1922.
The deceased was born in Spartanburg, SC. moving to Texas when a young man. He located in Smith county near Starville. He was married to Miss Annie Laurie Garner of Starville in 1882. For several years he taught school in Smith county. He joined the Masonic lodge at Starville 35 years ago.
At the time of his death and for many years previously he had been a member of the Winona Baptist church.
Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at Harris Creek church three miles west of Winona. Thorndike Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. The Masonic lodge will have charge of the services at the grave.
Survivors are his wife; eight children, Mrs. J. A. Culpepper and H. Kirby of Winona; J. D. Kirby of Winona, Mrs. C. S. Foster of Gilmer, J. W. Kirby, Mrs. Fred Birdsong, and Mrs. W. R. Powell of Tyler, Webb Kirby of Winona, 22 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
