Ellen Mae Hedke, daughter of William and Ernestine Hafner Hedke was born November 2, 1879 in Randolph, Riley County, Kansas. She dies Saturday, April 20, 1974, in Yucca Valley, California, where she had been a resident for the past five years. She grew up in the Randolph Community, attending the Randolph and Prairie Rock Schools.
She married Seldon B. Laird January 1, 1900. They farmed in the Parallel, Winkler, Randolph and Riley communities before buying and moving to a farm south of Olpe, Kansas where she lived for many years.
Mrs. Laird was a member of the Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband who died May 13th, 1933, and by two sons, Silas and Wendell. She is survived by fourteen children: six sons, Seldon B. Jr. of Strawn, Kansas, Lloyd and Kenneth E of Wichita, Harold of Chadron, Nebraska; Elston E. of Torrance, California and Melvin R. of Kansas City, MO.
Eight daughters: Bessie Loe, Palm Springs, California; Irene H. Kelly, Nevada, Missouri,; Lucille M. Bartram, Yucca Valley, California; Alberta V. Cole, Seattle, Washington, Hallie G. Winsand, Durham, California, Agnes C. Cashman, Las Vegas, Nevada; Mabel A Bennett, Baltimore, Maryland; and Marguerite H. Melton, Kearney, Missouri. One brother, Charles Hedke, Randolph and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. April 24th in the Roberts Blue-Barnett Chapel, Emporia, Kansas. They were conducted by the Rev. Jack T. Barron, pastor of the First Christian Church. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery southeast of Olpe, Kansas.
