Highland's first beer was brewed at 713 Broadway in 1841 by John Geismann , a cooper by trade, at his residence. He continued his brewing business until 1877 when extreme age forced him to retire. At the rear of his home he built a cellar in which to age the beer. This cellar was 20x18 and was built of stone with an archer ceiling.
