Had Leading Part In Welfare Work

Prominent in welfare work and women's organizations, Julia Isabelle Montgomery Sheppard, widow of O. B. Sheppard, one-time manager of the Princess Theatre, died yesterday at her home, 288 Russell Hill Rd. She had been ill for some months.

Mrs. Sheppard was a member of one of Toronto's oldest families and was the granddaughter of the owner of historic Montgomery's Tavern, located at Yonge St. and Montgomery Ave., the meeting place of William Lyon MacKenzie and his followers during the Rebellion of 1837. Born at Sharon, Mrs. Sheppard was the daughter of Dr. John Montgomery. She received her education in Toronto public schools and Jarvis Collegiate.

Mrs. Sheppard had devoted much time to assisting veterans of the First Great War. She was the oldest member of the Children's Aid Society board and was keenly interested in the York Pioneers and Historical Society. She was also a member of the United Empire Loyalists, the Women's Historical Society, Army and Navy Veterans, and the IODE, and had been actively associated with the work of St. John's Garrison Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frank Johnston; a son, Clare B. Sheppard, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Oscar G. Clark.
