Susan C. Binder, 52, Whitfield, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, in her residence. She was the wife of Mark J. Steffen. Born in West Reading, she was a daughter of Christine M. (Lewicki) Binder, Whitfield, and the late Charles H. "Bud" Binder.

She was a 1976 graduate of Wyomissing High School where she starred in basketball and track from 1974 to 1976. She was an all-county performer in both sports and county champion in the low hurdles, culminating with the Leroy "Pro" Nelson Award as the outstanding female athlete in 1976. She then graduated Magna Cum Laude from Penn State in 1980. Susan was an active member of St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, Whitfield, where she was a student of the Bible and studied in the Lay Ministry Program at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville. She coached CYO boys basketball and track at St Ignatius. She was also a coach and official at Van Reed Athletic Association, Wyomissing Area Programs, and various summer leagues around the county.

After her distinguished high school sports career, Susan remained active throughout her life, especially enjoying horseback riding, water sports, boating and her Siberian Huskies with her husband and son.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Shane Steffen, a 2009 graduate of Penn State and a current graduate student at Alvernia University; and three siblings: Marcia A. Binder, wife of Rick Fehling, Wyomissing; Stephen C., husband of Tina Binder, Lincoln Park; and Evelyn M. Witman, Wyomissing. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews: Jessica, Stephen, and Stephanie Binder; Geoffrey and Kara Fehling; and Laura, Michelle and Melanie Witman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St Ignatius Church. Entombment will be in Gethsemane Mausoleum. Friends may call Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. in the church. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of the arrangements..
