Martha Jane Newhouse was the daughter of Samuel Newhouse and Martha "Patsy" Sandifur, who were married on 19 Dec 1811 in Franklin County, Indiana. Martha Sandifur was the daughter of Robert Sandifur and Winifred Bailey. Samuel Newhouse was the son of revolutionary soldier Pvt. Isaac Newhouse and Catherine VanPelt; Samuel died in Clinton County, Missouri about 1849. Samuel and Martha Newhouse moved from Indiana to Gardner Twp, Sangamon County, Illinois in 1819, and are listed among the first settlers.
Martha Jane Newhouse was born in Sangamon County, Illinois. In 1837, Martha's family moved from Illinois to La Porte County, Indiana, then by 1844 moved to Clinton County, Missouri.
