An investigation was under way today into the death of James B. Arnold, 51, 1300 North Fifteenth Street, Pennsylvania Railroad fireman, fatally injured in an accident aboard a freight train.

Arnold, an employee for thirty-two years, died last night while working on the running board of the locomotive as the freight moved slowly past Ryde, about sixteen miles west of Lewistown, railroad officials reported.

Officials said the boiler fire apparently backfired, igniting Arnold's clothes.

Relatives here were notified that Arnold went to the front of the locomotive to attempt repairs when the locomotive was unable to get up sufficient steam.

Arnold is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bertha M. Arnold; two sons, Lester, Harrisburg and Richard, at home; a daughter, Fay, at home; two brothers, Russell, Colonial Park and Harry, East Salem, R. D.; a sister, Miss Clara Arnold, Williamsport and his mother, Mrs. Emma Arnold, Williamsport.

Services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Richard Lee Snyder Funeral Home, 1720 Regina Street, the Rev. Dr. Lewis C. Manges, Memorial Lutheran Church, officiating.
