Mattie, in adulthood had the mental and social abilities of a three-year-old. She grew up in the big old house which her father built. When her parents died she became the ward of her younger sister, Edna, who was married to Fred Saul. As the Saul children were born and grew, competition between Mattie and them developed. But childhood squabbles between a 3 year old child and a 33 year old retarded woman can be disastrous for the child. When Edna could no longer control the situation she committed Mattie to the State Mental Hospital at Anna. She lived out her life there. Because of tranportation difficulies Edna and Mattie seldom saw each other. I remember the only time I saw Aunt Mattie, circa 1934. We encountered a (brick?)road somewhere around Carbondale on the trip to Anna. That was our family's first ride on a hard surface road. We gave Aunt Mattie her first ride in an automobile (1931 Ford Tudor) and her reaction, at 15 miles per hour, was "My goodness! Slow down Fred! You're a gonna kill us all!"
