Dr. Edward A. Shafer, 89, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at his home, following a brief illness.

Born January 20, 1918, in Kingston, he was a son of Charles L. and Mary Bach Shafer. He was a lifelong resident of the Wyoming Valley.

A 1936 graduate of Wyoming Seminary, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University in 1940 and graduated from Jefferson Medical School in 1944.

A captain in the U. S. Army, he served in Tokyo, Japan, as a medical technical intelligence officer from 1945 to 1947. Following his discharge from the service he was a physician in Kingston, serving in general and family practice from 1947 until his retirement in 1987.

He was affiliated with the staff of Nesbit Memorial Hospital and served on numerous committees and as a president of the staff in 1963.

He served on several committees for the Luzerne Medical Society and was a charter fellow and life member of the American Academy of Family Practice. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the American Medical Association.

He served as school physician of Wyoming Seminary from 1947 to 1982. A former member of the Alumni Association, he served as a trustee of Wyoming Seminary from 1965 to 1988 and as life trustee since 1988.

He was elected to the Wyoming Seminary Sports Hall of Fame in 1984 and received the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1986, at the time of his 50th reunion. He received the Wyoming Seminary Distinguished Service Award in 1995. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ Uniting, he was a member of the Finance and Investment committees. He was previously a member of the Committee of One Hundred of the Chamber of Commerce and the Hospital Council of Wyoming Valley. He also served on several committees of the United Way.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Charles B. and Robert C. Shafer; his stepmother Gladys Hall Shafer.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Nancy Halsey Shafer; son John Halsey Shafer and his wife, Catherine, of Kingston; daughter Mary Shafer Wakeman and her husband, John, of Marlborough, Mass.; four grandchildren George Shafer, of Columbia, Md., Harry Shafer, of Burbank, Calif. and Anne and Alan Wakeman, of Marlborough, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in the Church of Christ Uniting, Market Avenue and South Sprague Avenue, Kingston. Private interment will be in Fern Knoll Cemetery, Dallas, at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hugh B. Hughes & Son Funeral Home Inc., 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Edward A. Shafer Memorial Fund c/o Development Office, Wyoming Seminary, 201 N. Sprague Ave., Kingston, PA 18704, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
