"Old Soldier Dead ~ John P. Ferris, who lived for quite a number of years past on a farm two miles northwest of Greenfield, died at his home last Saturday afternoon, following an illness of several months. Mr. Ferris was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in September 1843. During the civil war he served with an Ohio regiment. He came to Dade county something more than ten years ago, from Maryville, MO, where he had made his home prior to emigrating to this section of Missouri. He was a man of quiet disposition and did not extend his acquaintance rapidly but was well liked by his friends and is most highly spoken of by those who knew him best. He had no relatives in this section and for ten years past had made his home with the family of Charles Morrison, who lived on his place. It is understood that in gratitude for the many kindnesses shown him by the Morrison family during these years he willed one-half of his 80 acre farm to Mr. Morrison's small son.* Funeral services were held on Sunday morning and the remains interred thereafter in the Greenfield cemetery, where they were attended by a large assemblage of friends and neighbors."
