Vernon H. Volz of Polo passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at Liberty Court in Dixon. Born June 3, 1925, in rural Carroll County, the son of Henry and Katherine (Linker) Volz. Graduated from Polo Community High School in 1943 and entered the Navy and served proudly in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Vernon returned to Polo to work at various construction jobs until starting to work for Sears Roebuck in Sterling. He retired after 40 years of service. Married Marietta Toms on June 6, 1948. His beloved Marietta preceded him in death in 2006. Vernon was well known locally for his wonderful wood working projects, his affiliation with the Polo Senior Center and his continuous support of the Polo VFW of which he was a life member.

Survivors include daughter, Jeanne (Jeff) Kuhn of Dixon; son, John (Bonnie) Volz of Machesney Park; sister, Evelyn Kalas of Dixon; and grandchildren, Laura Kuhn of Woodridge, Paul (Megan) Kuhn of Plano and Jacob Volz of Machesney Park.

Predeceased also by parents, and brother, Donald Volz.

Service at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at Polo Family Funeral Home. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, in the funeral home.

Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Garden, Dixon. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Polo Senior Center and to Liberty Court.
