Fifth son of Alexander and Fannie (Ralston) Algeo. Starting just 10 months after her marriage, Fannie bore 10 children: eight sons and finally two daughters. While her later children were still young, Ireland suffered the beginning of the great potato famine which devastated the economy. Eventually she saw all but one of her sons and both daughters move far away across the Atlantic and she never knew most, if not all, of her grandchildren. Samuel and his brothers first lived in New York City, this is where he more than likely married Letitia Wray. A naturalization certificate was issued on 5 August 1863 by the Probate Court of Hamilton County, Ohio. Their first three children were born in Hamilton County, Ohio, The last Amy Belle was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Family tradition says, Amy Belle may have been a twin and at least one other child did not survive.

In about 1905, due to Letitia's ill health, their son Harry moved Samuel and Letitia to Kansas City where they lived until Letitia died in 1908. Samuel Algeo survived his wife by two years, continuing to reside with his son, Harry, in Kansas City, Missouri until his death. He is buried in Kansas City's Elmwood Cemetery.
