Born in or about 1896 in Tokat, Turkey to Boghos (Paul) and Nartouhi Damerjian Kurkjian- the gravestone's date of 1900 is incorrect. She survived the Armenian Genocide of 1915 after being kidnapped from a death march and some years later ended up in Galata, Istanbul, Turkey where she was reunited with some surviving nieces. Her niece Armenouhi moved to Bridgewater, Masschusetts, where a marriage was arranged for Vartanoush to an Armenian living there named Vahan Sarkisian of Quincy. Vartanoush sailed to America in 1926 and shortly after married Vahan, whose brother was married to Armenouhi's husband's cousin. Vartanoush and Vahan were the parents of two children, Vaughn and Nancy. Unfortunately Vartanoush passed away at a relatively young age due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
