William Rorer Jefferson, "Rorer" as he was known was born in Danville, Virginia. In 1901 he and his family moved to Madison, Wisconsin where his father had taken a job. The family moved again to Sparta where his father had started a business. "Rorer" graduated from high school there in 1912 and went to work for his father at the Jefferson Leaf Tobacco Company in Sparta. He later was in charge of the Black River Falls unit of the Jefferson Leaf and Tobacco Company.

He was a second lieutenant in France during World War I, assigned to the 89th Division, 1917-1918.

A telegraph message to his brother, Tom, stated, "Rorer died from a ruptured appendix the evening of May 29, 1925 at 7:15 in Sparta, Wisconsin. Two operations could not save him. Come Quick." The medical report listed an acute obstruction of the bowel with adhesions to the ileocecal valve junction. Contributary factors were an appendicidal abcess. His funeral was held in his parents home on Spring Street in Sparta. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta, Wisconsin.
