Edward was born to William Henry and Mary Kelly Chapin. He attended Law School at the Univ. of Cincinnati & graduated in 1886. Once he was established in Chattanooga in 1887 as a lawyer he co-founded the American National Bank & Trust Co. in 1912. Other business interests included officer positions in companies dedicated to furniture, hosiery, stove, bleachery and boiler works and a spinning mill. He was a member of the Lookout Commandery #14 Knights Templar. He has been quoted as follows: "I trust that you are not taking so serious a step without thorough contemplation that what you have determined to do will exercise a controlling influence on your life". He helped establish the Chattanooga Public Library and founded the Chapin Memorial Library in his home town of Petersburg, KY in 1948.
