George was the lighthouse keeper at Cape Saint Elias Lighthouse for twelve years [on uninhabited Kayak Island, 62 miles southeast of the nearest town, Cordova, Alaska. The island is 20 miles long and generally only
2 miles wide].
Then, they moved to Ketchikan where they owned and worked mining claims at Thorn Arm and Moth Bay on Revillagigo Island. The also operated the Alaska Oyster Company at Ketchikan.

George W. Fairbanks, age 65, died yesterday in the Marine Hospital at Seattle.
He suffered a stroke while coming out to Seattle, preparatory to moving to California.
He was a Ketchikan mine operator. He and
a partner operated gold, silver, and, copper mines the past six years.
He was educated at Genoa in Nebraska.
He was an engineer for the Soo Line Railroad
in Minnesota; the Portland, Oregon fire department; and on a Columbia River boat for the Oregon - Washington Railroad before moving to Alaska.
Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
