Austrian conductor. Born to the unwed 15-year-old Clementine Krauss, a ballet dancer at the Vienna Hofoper (now the Staatsoper), he was a friend and collaborator of Richard Strauss. His father, the chevalier Hector Baltazzi, was a member of a wealthy family of bankers with offices in Vienna. As a young boy, he joined the Vienna Boys Choir and, having studied piano and composition, graduated from the Vienna Conservatory in 1912.
