Mary Merritt was the daughter of Chloe Haines and Samuel Merritt, and the wife of Reuben Wilder. When Mary was young, her mother became ill, and the children shared the chores. Mary's job was to make the clothes for the family (card, spin & weave). Because she was so young, she had to use a bench to reach the wheel.

The Indianapolis News of Tuesday Evening, of February 21, 1882 ran this brief obituary: Mrs. Mary Wilder, mother of General J. T. Wilder, formerly of Greensburg, died at Chattanooga, Friday night, from injuries received some days ago.

Note: J. T. Wilder was General John Thomas Wilder of Civil War Fame (Wilder's Lightning Brigade).
