Frederick Louis Carr was born 1873 in Pitt County, NC, the 3rd of 4 known children born to Titus William Carr (1841-1903) and his 1st wife, Ada Gray Little. He was second cousin (once removed) to Gov. Elias Carr of North Carolina, through the lineage of Titus Carr, Sr.
He was the paternal grandson of Col. Matthew Lawrence Carr (1812-1899) and Sarah Saunders/Sanders of Greene County; and gr-grandson of Titus Carr Jr. (1788-1837), of Pitt County. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Thomas Carr (ca. 1648-1724) of England or Scotland who came to Nansemond County in the early 1700's. It was his grandson, Titus Carr, Sr. who first came to North Carolina and settled in Greene County. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of Louis Gray Little & Eliza Ann Louisa Eborn of Greene Co.
Frederick was 9 years old when his mother died in 1882. His father would remarry in 1887 to Dora E. Little, and by her would have a daughter, Dora Little Carr. Of note, his older brother, Matthew Lawrence Carr, who never married, became a prominent doctor in New York City as Otology Surgeon at the New York Throat, Nose and Lung Hospital, and to the West Side School for Crippled Children, New York City.
Frederick graduated summa cum laude in 1895 from UNC where he was Phi Beta Kappa and Editor-in-Chief Hellenian. From 1895-86 he was an instruction in UNC's Latin Department.
On December 10, 1908, the 35-year old married 29-year old Nannie Barnes Branch, daughter of BB&T bank founder Alpheus Branch, and granddaughter of Gen. Joshua Barnes of Wilson.
The couple would become parents to 2 known children: Frederick Louis Carr (1909-1981) and Alpheus Branch Carr (1911-1985).
Frederick and Nannie settled into their family home on Nash Street in Wilson where he managed the extensive farming interests (inherited from Alpheus Branch and Gen. Joshua Barnes), as well as being involved as Director for the BB&T branch, and Wilson Cotton Mills. Frederick was a 2-term member of the NC State Legislature, and Private Secretary to Senator Lee S. Overman for 6 years. He was a mason and member of the Wilson Country Club.
