Some history on him is:

Jan worked on a farm in the neighborhood (back in Ureterp, Friesland). He didn't think there was a lot of future in that, and so he decided to emigrate. On top of his future, the tuberculosis epidemic also made it a good idea to emigrate. At that time, there was a saying in Ureterp that Montana had a good climate that took care of tuberculosis and that was the place to go.

So, Jan emigrated in the spring of 1891. He left behind his girl friend, Fetje Middel living in Marum, with the understanding that if he found a job in America he would bring her over too. In October of 1891 Fetje came with Jan's brother Kornelis to America.
