S. Townsend Holly was born in New York and worked in Rockford, Illinois as a mechanic and engineer. He conducted the Holly Waterworks and invented water transportation systems in that city.

Around 1886 he retired to Southern California. He lived with his daughter, Anna Holly Marston, until her death in 1912, and then moved to Covina to live with his son Arthur.
