M.J. and Pauline met at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. The two enjoyed outings to Cedar Point Amusement Park during their courtship. They married Feb. 26th, 1919, and soon welcomed their first son, Michael III (known as "Jr."), into the world.
M.J. enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spent much time at the family summer home on Kelly's Island. During the summers, Pauline and the boys lived at the island house and Michael joined them each weekend after a week at the hardware store. The boys attended a summer camp on Kelley's opened by the pastor of their church.
On July 13, 1950, Pauline and Michael were in a train accident. She broke her neck, but was not permanently disabled and recovered in time. Michael was also seriously injured. More importantly, during his recovery it was discovered that he had leukemia. Despite care, including early radiation treatments at Ohio State University, he died early.
Pauline and Michael were the best of friends; after his death, she never re-married.
