-- ROCK HILL - Mrs. Barbara Jean Adkins Parks, 76, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at her home.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Grandview Memorial Park on Cherry Road, with the Rev. Dean Reynolds officiating.
A native of Fort Mill, Mrs. Parks was the daughter of the late Henry E. Adkins and the late Marie E. Gordon Adkins. She worked for Springs Cotton Mill until 1963 when she married Gerald Thomas Parks and saw the world as a Navy wife and mother. She moved to Rock Hill in 1970 and worked for JC Penney's, Robert Hall and Carolina Brokerage. Mrs. Parks was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who spent many hours holding school at the kitchen table. In addition, she was an avid genealogist who spent many days researching her family heritage. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Gerald Parks and her brother, Jack Adkins.
Mrs. Parks did not have in-laws and is survived by her children, David and Joyce Broadaway and Sharon and Phil Chappell, all of Rock Hill, Terri and Howie Pendleton of Indian Land and Charles and Ivette Workman of Tennessee; her brothers, Pete and Charlotte Adkins, Gene and Mary Adkins and Red and Ann Adkins, all of Fort Mill; and her sister, Ellen and Johnny Briggs of Fort Mill; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many foster children to whom she was a grandmother.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, 355 E. White St., Rock Hill, S.C.
