She and her first husband, Andrew Carnes, along with their two young children, started across the plains from Illinois in the spring of 1853. Mr. Carnes and one of the children died of cholera near Fort Laramie. Mrs. Carnes and her remaining child proceeded with the rest of the party to Marion County, Oregon, where her sister and brother-in-law lived. She made her home with them until her marriage to John Wesley Benefiel in 1854.
