John Henry McCarthy was the elder son of John C. McCarthy and Catherine "Kitty" Clifford McCarthy. He was born and raised in Chicago. He worked for Western Electric as a young man. After marriage, he and his wife Hazel traveled to Montana, living there for a while. He also later worked back in Chicago, after his wife died, as a chauffeur for the Chicago Motor Bus for the last 15 years of his life. He did not remarry. He died at age 51 of heart disease.
