Pearl became sick with TB and moved back in with her parents where they put a tent up in their backyard so the fresh air would make her better (that was the solution back then before they discovered the antibiotics that would cure it, which was still forty years in the future).
Back then it was called Consumption* and it was very contagious.
Pearl died right before Christmas, December 23, 1911, at her parents place, leaving a baby daughter (Pearl) to be raised by her parents. The baby was adopted by her grandparents after her mother died so went by Pearl Sandburg growing up.
Daughter Pearl married three times: (1) Coy H. Wadkins, (2) Homer Smith, (3) Roy Benner.
* Consumption was a term used for TB or Tuberculosis, a common and is some cases deadly infectious disease. TB usually attacks the lungs and is spread by the infected person coughing, sneezing, etc. The symptons are: chronic cough, blood-tinged spit, fever, night sweats, and weight loss - where the word consumption came from. Treatment is very difficult, especially back in the days before antibiotics. (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuberculosis)
