Police reported that Jerome Lowin shot and killed his wife, Sara Lowin, in their home in Golden, Colorado, and then shot himself dead. The reason of this murder/suicide is unknown.
A memorial service for the couple were held Tuesday, September 20, in Golden, Colorado, at the Applewood Valley United Methodist Church in Golden, Colorado, with Revs. Mabel Rice and Donald Bieyle officiating.
Funeral services for the couple were 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 22, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bloomfield, with the Rev. Hans R. Nelson, pastor, officiating. Music was furnished by Ted Powell on the organ, accompanying Jennifer Powell as soloist. Pallbearers for Jerome were Owen Frevert, Tom Skrivan, Melvin Barger, Dennis Lowin, David Peters and Jim Hadley. Burial will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, Nebraska, with full Military Honors conducted by the Bloomfield Ray Lamb American Legion Post #249.
Jerome Vernon Lowin was born August 11, 1936, in Bloomfield, the son of John and Dorothy (Bahr) Lowin. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. He attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from Bloomfield High School with the class of 1955. He attended advanced study at Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He moved to California to work and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force specializing in photography. Following his discharge from service, he returned home and farmed with his father for one year. He then became employed with a manufacturing firm in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
He married Sara Nadine Johnson on July 29, 1962, and were the parents of two sons, Bart and Jon. They lived in Cedar Falls, where he was employed with Phillips 66, a company then involved in nuclear energy, at their experimental facility in Idaho. While in Idaho, he furthered his interest in flying and through training, obtained his commercial pilot license and began flying tourists over the National Parks and other charged flights. He then joined Western Airlines and soon advanced to Captain and chief pilot, flying out of Denver, Colorado, until he retired to Golden.
He is survived by two sons, Bart and Jon Lowin, both at home; his mother, Dorothy Lowin of Bloomfield; one brother, Kenneth (Audrey) Lowin of Cedar Falls, IA; one nephew; and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his father and his wife.
