She attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of Wyoming. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at UW. During World War II, she attended Jefferson Medical College Hospital of Philadelphia and earned a diploma in medical technology in 1945. She married James E. Barrett in Rawlins on Oct. 8, 1949. They made their home in Lusk for 18 years. He practiced law in the firm of Barrett & Barrett, and she was a homemaker. They and their three children moved to Cheyenne in 1967 after her husband accepted an appointment by Gov. Stanley K. Hathaway to serve as Wyoming attorney general. She was a member of Saint Mary's Cathedral Parish and was active in Cathedral Guild, hospital auxiliaries and the choirs at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Lusk and St. Mary's Cathedral. In later years, she traveled extensively throughout the world and was devoted to opera, theatre, literature, nature and power walking. She especially loved the oceans and the mountains.
