He was born in Fergus Falls, MN to Albert and Martha Bakken on December 9, 1929. Allan was baptized and confirmed at Hitterdal Lutheran Church in Maple Bay, MN. He worked on the family farm until joining the Army in 1952. While enlisted, Allan came down with a near fatal case of pneumonia, which kept him from being deployed to Korea during the war. After he recovered he was stationed in Alaska then later at Fort Lawton. In 1954, after completing his active duty, he started classes at the Lutheran Bible Institute of Seattle where he met the love of his life Jerraine Pearson.
Allan and Jerraine were married December 23, 1956 at First Immanuel Lutheran Church in Portland. They were together more than 50 years until Jerraine's passing in 2007.
Allan worked as a Longshoreman for the Port of Portland until retiring in 1992. He was a hard and diligent worker. He was kind and generous to a fault and lent a helping hand to all whenever he could. Allan's unwavering faith in God was an important part of his life. He was blessed with the gift of servanthood as an active member of his church through ushering, grounds-keeping, and greeting newcomers. Allan was a very social person and enjoyed sharing jokes and stories with everyone he met.
Allan and Jerraine loved to travel the United States. Among their favorite places were Washington DC, Glacier National Park, and the Columbia Gorge. They made numerous trips to Hawaii and enjoyed several cruises. Family was important to Allan and he estimated that they made approximately 50 trips back home to Minnesota over the years.
Allan is survived by his three sons Dean, Brad and Ron, their wives; his daughter Janice; grandchildren Cody, Sady, Steve and Patrick; sister Theone Stangeland, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents and sisters Adeline Johnson and Myrtle Broden.
