Dr. Edward Wilson Rawls, 60 a practicing physician in Portsmouth for the last 30 years, and active in civic and political affairs, died yesterday at 2:15 p.m. at his residence, 2625 Bay View Boulevard. His health had been impaired for a long time. Dr. Rawls served for 20 years on the medical staff of King's Daughters' Hospital.
He was a native of Isle of Wight County, the son of Dr. Gavin and Mrs. Susie Norfleet Rawls.
He attended Franklin Academy and afterward went to the University of Richmond and later to the Medical College of Virginia, from which he was graduated in 1909, serving as president of his class.
He held membership in Port Norfolk Baptist Church, Tidal Wave Lodge A.F. & A.M.; Portsmouth Rotary Club, the Norfolk County Medical Society, American Medical Association, Virginia State Medical society, and while at the Medical College of Virginia he was a member of the Phi Beta Pi fraternity.
On District Committee
In politics he was identified with the Democratic Party and was active in its affairs, having served as chairman of the City Democratic Executive Committee and also as Portsmouth representative on the Second District Committee of the State Democratic organization.
He was prominently identified with establishment of the Portsmouth Country Club at Glensheallah and served as president of the organization for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Virginia Rawls; a son, Lieut. Edward Gordon Rawls, USA; two sisters, Mrs. W. Asa Biggs, of Baltimore and Mrs. Richard S. Dodson, of New York, and a brother, Dr. Julian Rawls, of Norfolk.
The body will be taken tomorrow afternoon from the Snellings Funeral Home to Port Norfolk Baptist Church for funeral services at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk.
