Louise M. Coffman, wife of Dean W. Coffman, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 4, 2011.

She was born in Turlock, Calif., on August 11, 1924, the daughter of Christopher E. Mann and Annie Laurie Curtice Mann.

She graduated from Turlock High School in 1942, Modesto Junior College in 1944, and taught elementary school in California for one year. She married Dean in 1945 and they moved to Pennsylvania in 1948.

Mrs. Coffman is survived by a son, Dane W. Coffman of Leesville, S.C.; two daughters, Nancy Hildreth of Woodbury, Minn., and Janet Dempsey of Windsor Twp.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence Mann of Milwaukie, Ore., and John Mann of Lodi, Calif.; and a sister, Margaret Baker of Modesto, Calif.; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Chris Mann of Turlock, Calif.; and a sister, Mary Maxwell of of Sacramento, Calif.

Mrs. Coffman resumed her education at Millersville State College (now Millersville University) in 1957 and began teaching at the old Springettsbury School at the same time. She graduated from Millersville in 1961. She earned her Master's degree at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in 1966. She retired from teaching at Thomasville Elementary School, part of the Spring Grove School District, having taught 29 years. In 1980 she began freelance writing for the York Sunday News. She was asked to write a column, "Notes from the Country," for 10 years. In 1998, exactly 50 years after she had moved to Pennsylvania, she began writing novels about early Pennsylvania Dutch history as seen through the eyes of a 10 year old boy. Abner's Story, Abner's Escape, and Abner's Journey to America are the result. The fourth book, Abner's Dilemma, will be published posthumously.

Mrs. Coffman was a member of St. Paul's/Wolf's Church where she served on consistory, was in charge of the Bible Ministry, and wrote a monthly column for the newsletter. She also belonged to the American Association of University Women, York County Pennsylvania Association of State Retirees, and the Invest-Hers Investment Club. She is listed in Who's Who of America.

Interment will be in Wolf's Church Cemetery.
