Born in Southhampton Row, London, he first played violin, and later swiched to the cello. At age 11 debuted at a Queen's Hall recital. Joined the Beecham Orchestra at Covent Garden in 1920 . He toured America, and when WWII broke out he conducted several hazardous journeys to return to England. Once there, in 10 weeks time, he conducted 34 concerts with the London Philharmonic, the BBC and the London Symphony Orchestras. He was Knighted in 1949.
