Kenneth B. Campbell, 99, died Jan. 5, 2011, at Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit where he had been a guest for 6 years.
Born in Picture Rocks, Pa., on Feb. 17, 1911, he was a son of James G. and Sadie Confer Campbell and a direct descendant of Samuel Campbell who lived near the Tiadaghton Elm and was a member of the "Fair Play Men" and also of Sam's son, Robert, a Revolutionary soldier.
A lifelong lover of sport he ran track and played basketball, football and baseball at the former Picture Rocks High School. Later he played adult baseball at Montgomery, and with the Rocky 5 basketball team of Picture Rocks. He also played baseball for the East End Cubs of Williamsport.
Kenny was an avid outdoorsman all his life, an expert native trout fisherman and fur trapper.
Also during the depression, he worked for the WPA as a cement finisher. Many of the old sidewalks in Montgomery were finished by him.
While living with his wife and children at Montgomery, he attended Williamsport Technical Institute, now Penn College, by walking and running to WTI and home every day. He graduated from WTI in 1942 and started work at Lycoming Division Of The Aviation Corporation, now Textron.
During W.W.II while working at Lycoming Division Of The Aviation Corporation, he received several medals for his work on the Lycoming airplane engine.
Kenny, in his younger years, met Babe Ruth while the Babe was on tour and visited in Williamsport. And so he became a New York Yankee fan and remained one all his life.
He was married for 66 years to the former Minnie Hartman who died in 2000. They were the parents of two children, Gary of Williamsport and Marilee (Mrs. Philip) Sholtis of Muncy. There are seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Betty Lou Harris of Montoursville.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Clyde, Tom, Walter, and Carl; and a sister, Dorthy.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Muncy Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Patterson, officiating.
