William Lane Joynt as President of the Limerick Literary & Scientific Society, proposed the establishment of a Limerick Athenaeum. In 1862 he was elected Mayor of Limerick and the following year he moved to Dublin where in 1867 he was elected Lord Mayor. In 1869 he was appointed the Crown and Treasury Solicitor for Ireland.
