W.J. Thomas was born in 1853 in Lamar County, Texas, and married Mary Elloide, who had been born in 1859, in Williamson County, Texas. They had two girls, Jennie and Adah, and 6 boys, Austin, Fulton, Will, Golden, Fred, and Noble.
In 1900, they moved to Potter County, settling three miles east of John Ray Butte, near the old wagon road that led to Hutchinson, Hansford and Ochiltree counties. After 18 months, they moved to Channing.
