William "Willis" Banks was the son of John Banks and Elizabeth Jane "Jenny" [Marksberry]Banks, natives of Amherst, Virginia, who met and married in Garrard Co., Kentucky where Willis and his siblings were born.

By 1830, Willis was living in Grant County, Kentucky, where he married Rebecca Emaline Thomas, daughter of James J. B. Thomas and Sarah (Sally) Childers, both natives of Virginia.

Willis and Rebecca, who was usually called Emaline, had 12 children that we know of, with the possible exception of Charles, who was born in Wisconsin and may have been an orphan they took in. Otherwise, all the children were born in Adams County, Illinois, where the family moved after the birth of their first child.

The names of their children were:

John James, 1831
William H., 1833
Teresa M., 1835
Presley, 1837-1839
Sarah, 1838
Thomas Jefferson, 1841
Mary Ann, 1844
Emeline, 1846-1848
Charles W., 1848
Jasper Auburn, 1852
Joanna E., 1854
Henry F., 1857

In 1850, the family is found in Gilmer Twp., Adams Co., Illinois. In 1860, they are in Fort Scott, McGeen Co., Kansas. In 1865 they are in Girard Twp., Crawford Co., KS. In 1870 they are in Baker Twp., Crawford Co., KS. Suddenly, in 1880, Willis, now widowed, is living with his daughter, Teresa M. Banks Smith, in Santa Rosa Twp., Sonoma Co., CA. His wife, Rebecca Emeline, probably died in Kansas, but we have not yet found a record of her death.

Willis died in Bakersfield, Kern Co., CA in early 1881, probably while staying with his daughter Mary Ann Banks Cox, wife of Jonathan King Cox whom she had met and married when the families were living in Kansas.

It is presumed that Willis is buried in the family plot at Union Cemetery in Bakersfield, but confirmation needs to be obtained.

The descendants of Willis and Rebecca Banks are numerous and live in many states, from Illinois, to Kansas, and California to Oregon.
