Victoria Mariana Helena Friese, usually known as Helena, was the first wife of the famous Bristol portrait photographer and probable inventor of cinematography, William Friese-Greene. Although there is confusion due to competition by others (Louis Lumiere in 1895 and Thomas Edison in 1896) he was the very first to patent (no.10131) a basic movie camera capable of taking 10 photographs per second using celluloid film on June 21, 1889. Many years elapsed before others could develop the movie camera to be smoother (faster) and more reliable!

Helena (Lena to her family) was the daughter of a German Baron and met William whilst staying in Bristol with relatives. They married on March 24, 1874 at St. George's Church, Brandon Hill, Bristol, England. William added her maiden name of Friese to his surname of Green also adding an 'e' to Green as structural balance for professional reasons. She gave birth to one child, a daughter, Ethel, in 1876 of whom she was very close. Although her husband's constant bankruptcy must have been a great worry, her tragic premature death is recorded on her death certificate as being meningitis and apoplexy (stroke).
