Eugene J. "Gene" Appel, 73, of Springfield died Sunday at St. John's Hospice.
He was born Oct. 21, 1919, in Henry, the son of Henry and Marie Beck Appel. He married Cleobelle Koch in 1940 in St. Louis, Mo. Preceding him in death were two grandsons and two brothers.
Mr. Appel retired from S.J. Groves Construction Co. in 1985 after 30 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Temple and a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. Surviving are his wife, Cleobelle; a son, Eric of Richardson, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Sandra) Mahone and Mrs. Carl (Connie) Barnett, both of Peoria, and Mrs. Kenneth (Jo) Sexton of Springfield; and two brothers, Ralph of Lacon and Milford of Chillicothe.
Burial will be in City Cemetery in Chillicothe.
