Husband to Mary Welty McKnight.
He graduated from Pennsylvania College in 1865 and became the President there in 1884, serving as such until 1904. He supported a "soundly Christian" education at Gettysburg and was committed to retaining the core curriculum of Greek, Latin, and mathematics. McKnight was the first president who spent much time soliciting funds from a range of constituencies particularly for a building that would be a "wider place for a greater work" on campus. He also was a minister, graduating from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg.
