Son Arrives Too Late as Ailing Father Dies
Staff Sergeant George Robert Niemeyer, tug-boat captain in Vietnam, was flown on emergency leave to United States this morning, arriving in Madison 14 hours after death of his father, George H. Niemeyer, 66.
The elder Niemeyer for several years retired had lived at 127 Brook St., Portage. Until retiring some five years ago, he was employed as a salesman for the Nold Wholesale Co., Portage, a position he had held, the family said, for more than 20 years.
Sergeant Niemeyer said he had been granted emergency leave when University hospital physicians informed military authorities that his father's condition was critical and that an immediate amputation was indicated.
The operation, the son said, was performed but failed to save the ailing elderly man's life.
Other survivors include two brothers, Clyde and Henry Niemeyer, both of Portage, and two sisters; Mrs. Elizabeth Kummer, Beaver Dam, and Mrs. Caroline Burke, Corte Modern, Calif., and one grandchild.
Relatives said funeral services would be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday from the Port funeral home. Burial will be made in Oak Grove cemetery with Rev. Robert W. McKeithen officiating.
