U.S. Congressman. Moving to New York City, in 1828, where he engaged in mercantile and farming pursuits. He moved to Ellenville, New York., in 1834, was a member of the Ulster County Board of Supervisors, in (1842-43, 61-62, 65-70), clerk of Ulster County, (1843-47) and served as president of the Ellenville Glass Works. In addition, he served as Postmaster of Ellenville, president of the Ellenville Savings Bank and was responsible for collecting taxes for Ulster County, during the Civil War. In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress, serving until 1873.
