=====

from Thursday's Daily.

Grfield Abbott was buried in cement and smothered to death yesterday afternoon about 3:15 o'clock at while working at the Ash Grove Lme and Portland Cement Company's plant north of the city.

He was helping to sack cement from a bin which had a small amount taken from it and the doors had not yet been opened the cement being reached through a hole. All other men had gone from this department with some cars aand young Abbott was left alone.

It is suppoed that he went into the bin thriugh the hole to rake down the cemenet so that it would be easier to get. When the men were attracted by his screams they had to break open the doors and all of them worked frantincally for perhaps ten minutes before they got him out.

He was found in a standing position against the wall, for when the slide came he had no chanve to reach the hole to get out. The cement had packed so closely about him it had snuffed out his life spark.

Dr. F. R. Hickey, county coroner was scalled. He summoned F. S. Wilson and his ambulance and the dead man was brought to Mr. Wilson's undertaking parlors, where the body was prepared for burial.

Garfield Abbott was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Abbott of 42 North Santa Fe avenue, where he had lived with his parents since they came to the city last June. He had been here since December 1910, and had been employed at the north plant as a burner and other work since that time.

He was an honest, industrious young man and quite well liked among his fellow workmen. He had only worked in the sacking department for about a week.

He was born June 24, 1892, turning 19 years old last June. His birthplace was Tennessee where he lived prior to coming to Chanute.

Besides the parents he leaves three brothers and three sisters behind. He was a member of the Motern Woodmen of America, having joined that organization two months ago.

The funeral services will be held at the house tomorrow morning at 10:30. The moder Woodman will have charge. The body will be taken to Ash Grove, Mo. for burial.
