Graduated from Olgethorpe University Nov. 13, 1850.
Licensed to preach by the Tuscumbia Presbytery, AL in 1852.
Graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary June 30, 1853.
Married Sophie Edwards Smith Feb 1, 1855 in Charleston, S.C.
Installed as pastor at the Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church, Liberty Hill, S.C.in 1858.

Early 1863, served as chaplain for the 10th S.C. Regiment under General Manigault for the remainder of the War Between the States on the western front. Chaplain Richards saw service in the Vicksburg Campaign, Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga, and was in the severe fighting on Snodgrass Hill.
