Son of George (born 1780 in Culpepper, Virginia) and Sarah (Franklin) Purvis. Philip was nine years old when he moved with his family to Ralls County, Missouri, where he lived until he married Matilda Stice in Monroe County, Missouri. Philip and Matilda soon came to Scotland County, Missouri where they homesteaded a section of land near Bible Grove. At that time the area was a wilderness and their nearest neighbors were several miles away. They reared a family of ten children, six daughters and four sons.
