U.S. Congressman. Successful in the general merchandise business, he was Newark Town Supervisor, (1834-35) and a member of New York State Senate, (1838-41). In 1848, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John M. Holley, serving until 1849. After his term, he resumed his former business activities and was Newark Town Supervisor, (1852-53). He died by accidentally drowning in a well at his home at age 52.
