U.S. Congressman. In 1831, he established the Northern Light newspaper, in Ogdensburg, New York and later became part owner of the Times and Advertiser newspaper. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1838, practiced law in Ogdensburg and was elected a justice of the New York State Supreme Court, serving 1853-76. In addition, he also was Major General of the New York Militia. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881. After leaving Congress, he lived in retirement until his death.
